When landscaping with daylilies, a one-of-each design style usually doesn't work! Group three or more of each variety together in a patch for the most impact and eye appeal. Put tall varieties in back and short ones in front. "Stair Stepping" with three different plant heights creates depth and character. By combining several patches of complimenting varieties, textures and heights you create a perennial garden.
To expand your garden into multiple season appeal, start early. Then visit you garden center supplier regularly to see later bloomers. Check for a Happy Ever Appster® and Trophytaker® Daylilies at fine independent garden centers throughout the Eastern United States. Enhance designs with colorful additions such as Hasslefree® Roses and BlewLabel® Perennials.
Test your CharityPlants Daylily design by patterning potted plants over bed. Double-check growth habits. Picture how they'll look once matured: adjust layout then make a reference drawing. Remove plants from bed and till soil, blending amendments to tweak texture: peat or compost to enrich soils, grit or perlite to aerate heavy clay soils. Dig holes wider but not deeper than root ball. Place hand over pot soil surface, invert, lift pot off plant. If roots are circling root ball, cut three shallow vertical scores. Gently set into, adjust height so plant surface matches soil surface. Backfill and firm. Generously water immediately. Apply 1-2" of mulch. Conditions vary with locale. For best results, ask you local garden center representative.
